Pendulum Skid Resistance Testing

We provide Pendulum Skid Resistance Testing to assess the slip resistance and frictional properties of floor and surface materials. The Pendulum Test is a widely recognised method for evaluating surface safety and helping determine compliance with applicable testing standards.

Originally developed in the USA in the 1940s and subsequently adopted and further developed in the UK by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) during the 1960s, the instrument is commonly known as the TRL Pendulum Tester.

Pendulum Skid Resistance Test

The Pendulum Skid Resistance Test can be performed in accordance with BS EN 13036-4:2011, a standard that specifies the method for measuring the slip/skid resistance of road and airfield surfaces using a pendulum tester.

The test measures the frictional interaction between a standardised rubber slider attached to the end of a swinging pendulum arm and the surface being tested. As the slider travels across the surface, the energy lost due to friction is measured and used to determine the surface’s skid resistance.

Why Use a Pendulum Skid Tester?

The Pendulum Skid Tester is a practical and reliable instrument for assessing surface friction, particularly in locations where other testing methods may be unsuitable or impractical.

It can help identify potentially slippery surfaces, evaluate surface performance and support slip-resistance assessments for appropriate applications.

Our Testing Services Include

  • Pendulum skid resistance testing
  • Surface friction assessment
  • Slip-resistance evaluation
  • Test result reporting and certification, subject to the applicable testing scope and requirements

Note: BS EN 13036-4:2011 specifically addresses road and airfield surfaces. For flooring, tiles, bathrooms and other pedestrian areas, the appropriate test method and standard should be selected according to the application and relevant requirements.
